Lotta and the Waves – Cinematic Coastal Photography Rooted in Nature and Narrative

Charlotte Pieper, known professionally as Lotta and the Waves, is a German-born photographer whose body of work explores the emotional terrain between nature and narrative. Working primarily along coastlines, her photography is defined by a cinematic quietude — images suspended between movement and stillness, often shot in natural light and grounded in a documentary sensibility.

Her work blends the aesthetics of analog imperfection with modern composition, drawing from both surf culture and visual storytelling traditions. Lotta’s photographs do not shout — they observe, inviting the viewer to witness solitude, intimacy, and the spaces we often overlook. She now lives and works between Europe and tropical coasts, following the rhythm of the sea and light.
