Freedom, Focus, and the Frontline: The Unfiltered Drive of Evgenii Tiapkin

An Interview with Evgenii Tiapkin By Ollimono Magazine | June 19 2025

“To stand still, you have to keep running.” That’s the kind of thing you hear from someone who doesn’t just build companies, but moves through life with a current of relentless momentum. For Evgenii Tiapkin, Executive Director of Freedom24, balance doesn’t mean slowing down. It means channeling everything into movement — with intention.

We met in Limassol, Cyprus, in a focused, dimly lit space close to the seafront. It’s here that Evgenii leads one of the fastest-growing financial service providers in Europe, and it’s also where he organizes sailing regattas with colleagues and friends. On paper, the two might seem worlds apart. But to him, they come from the same place: discipline, clarity, and a refusal to stand still.

Evgenii Tiapkin, in our eyes, embodies what it means to be a high-performance visionary. Not because of titles or metrics, but because of how he leads with clarity, builds with intention, and lives without fragmentation. He doesn’t separate work from life, challenge from joy, or discipline from purpose. In a world increasingly distracted, his story is one of alignment between values, action, and ambition. That’s the kind of mindset we believe is worth sharing.

“We don’t have ‘quiet’ years here.”

Tiapkin moved to Cyprus in 2014. Since then, the local team has grown to over 400 employees, supporting more than half a million clients across Europe. Offices have opened in Athens, Warsaw, Berlin, Madrid. The pace hasn’t slowed once.

“People think Cyprus is all beaches and siestas. That’s not the case at all. We don’t have time to lie around. If you want movement in life, you create that movement around you.”

Freedom24 is the European arm of a larger publicly traded U.S. holding, Freedom Holding Corp. Being listed on NASDAQ, the company is among the most tightly regulated brokers operating on the continent. “Most firms report once a year. We report four times. Most have one auditor. We have three. That forces you to build a team with a completely different level of expertise.”

The company’s trading platform is developed in-house, and it’s all headquartered in Cyprus. Evgenii’s focus? Keeping operations transparent, compliant, and always a step ahead. “When others copy your moves, it’s a signal we’ve done something right. But we’re already working on what comes next. That’s why we never worry — we’re already two steps into the future.”

“Sailing isn’t a sport. It’s how we live.”

What began as a weekend hobby quickly turned into a core part of Evgenii’s life. “I got my captain’s license the same year we opened our Cyprus office. It felt like the natural next step. Cyprus doesn’t have the kind of mountains I used to climb, but there’s wind. There’s water. There’s speed.”

Freedom now supports multiple employee-led sailing crews — many formed organically through workplace camaraderie. “It’s not just a sport. It’s how we learn to work together. Everyone has a role. Everyone’s responsible for something.”

From sail tuning and mast prep to budgeting and branding — each regatta is a full-scale operation. “We’re not professional sailors, but we do take it seriously and try to be as professional as possible when we compete. We love to win! More than that, we love to win as a team.”

They’ve raced alongside Olympic legends like Igor Matvienko and Evgeny Braslavets. “And yes, we’ve beaten them too,” he adds with a proud glint in his eye.

“We’ve built a culture where people care deeply.”

There’s something magnetic about the way Evgenii speaks about his team. Not in abstract terms. In names, faces, years spent building something that lasts.

“We just celebrated our 10th anniversary in Cyprus. I asked the team organizing the celebration to write down every single person who’s been with us since the start, so we could recognize and congratulate them all. I could’ve named them myself, but I didn’t want anyone to be missed. Recognition matters.”

He describes Freedom as a team sport. Like sailing. Like cycling. “No one here works ‘for the idea’ alone. We recognize contributions. But what really makes the difference is that people feel ownership. Most of us are shareholders. We’re building something we believe in, and something that belongs to us.”

“Anyone here who wants to grow — personally or professionally — will find the support. Whether that’s renovating a padel court behind our office, helping a colleague run a marathon, or encouraging someone to take on a new role. We don’t let achievements go unnoticed. Our reporting culture is designed to make sure every step forward is acknowledged.”

“I don’t believe in separating work and life.”

This is where the conversation turns. Most executives talk about work-life balance. Tiapkin doesn’t see it that way.

“I live my work as part of my life. It’s not a 9-to-5 followed by something else. It’s all one rhythm. That’s balance to me.”

That rhythm includes racing sailboats, fishing (when there’s time), raising three daughters with his wife, and trying to gather the whole extended family for a monthly lunch at a local taverna. “Sometimes I feel like I have to book time with my own children,” he jokes.

Even weekends aren’t sacred. “I don’t remember the last full weekend I took off. There’s always something — an event, a race, a business trip. But it’s never burnout. When you’re aligned with your purpose, it fuels you.”

“Sport gives me clarity.”

Before sailing, his previous serious athletic pursuit was mountaineering — he’s climbed Elbrus and Mont Blanc. These days, it’s regattas, the occasional football match, a bit of gym work. “I don’t train like a pro. But I stay active. Even rest, for me, is in movement. That’s how I prefer it. You’ll never find me lying on the sofa… well, maybe only if I’m sick,” he laughs.

He believes sport provides something work can’t – reset. “When you’re on the water, you’re not thinking about client reports. When you’re on the pitch, you’re not thinking about regulations. It clears your mind.”

And like work, it humbles you. “We don’t lose often in the office, but at sea, sometimes it happens. Sometimes we don’t hit our goals. And that’s a great experience on its own. It grounds you.”

“I hate losing. I take it hard. If I lose (which doesn’t happen often), I can walk around visibly upset for two days, sometimes two weeks. But then I analyze, course-correct, and set a new target. In sailing, we say you have to redeem yourself in the next race — and that’s what drives me.”

“Freedom is balance.”

When asked what freedom means to him, Evgenii pauses for a long time. Then, calmly:

“Freedom is balance. But not the kind people usually mean. It’s waking up and doing something that matters to you. Whether that’s a 12-hour workday or a race in the sun — it’s your choice.”

“And freedom isn’t something you win once and keep forever. You have to protect it. Stay in motion. The moment you stop — you lose it.”

Not Just Sport — A Corporate DNA

Under Tiapkin’s leadership, Freedom’s commitment to movement extends far beyond the office. The company is a Super Grand Sponsor of Pavlos Kontides, Cyprus’ first Olympic medalist and Freedom24’s EU Ambassador, supporting his Olympic journey and events like the FAREAST 28R European Sailing Championship.

They’ve also made major investments in the development of chess in Cyprus, including launching the Freedom24 Chess Academy in Limassol, partnering with the Cyprus Chess Federation, and co-organizing top-tier events such as the FIDE Women’s Grand Prix and Cyprus Open Championships. On an international level, their parent company, Freedom Holding Corp., supported the 2024 FIDE World Rapid & Blitz Championships in New York City.

In football, Freedom24 is the General Partner of FC Freedom24-Krasava Ypsonas, reflecting their commitment to building a sustainable sports ecosystem.

Internally, they back a wide range of employee sporting efforts — from renovating municipality tennis courts while reimagining them as padel courts and encouraging sailing to marathon runs and fitness initiatives. Sport isn’t just a metaphor here. It’s a structure. A culture. A way of building the future and staying ahead.
